Treatment

Cough is one of the most frequent causes for a patient to consult their medical practitioner about. It limits the course of normal activities in everyday life (work, physical activities, social relations, night sleep). We can provide a comprehensive assessment and investigations for patients with chronic cough.

Lung cancer is one of the most common and serious types of cancer. Around 47,000 people are diagnosed with the condition every year in the UK. There are usually no signs or symptoms in the early stages of lung cancer, but many people with the condition eventually develop symptoms including: a persistent cough, coughing up blood, chest pain and breathlessness.

Mesothelioma is usually linked to asbestos exposure. Mesothelioma mainly affects the lining of the lungs (pleural mesothelioma), although it can also affect the lining of the tummy (peritoneal mesothelioma), heart or testicles. More than 2,600 people are diagnosed with the condition each year in the UK.

Bronchoscopy is an endoscopic technique of visualising the inside of the airways. The bronchoscope is inserted usually through the nose or mouth; this allows the operator to examine the patient’s airways for abnormalities such as foreign bodies, bleeding, tumours, infection or inflammation.

EBUS is a technique that uses ultrasound along with bronchoscopy to visualise the airway wall and structures adjacent to it. EBUS is a minimally invasive but highly effective procedure used to diagnose lung cancer, infection and other conditions causing enlarged lymph nodes in the chest. It allows real-time guidance of transbronchial needle aspiration (TBNA) of mediastinal and hilar structures and parabronchial lung masses.

Asthma is a common inflammatory disease of the airways of the lungs. It affects people of all ages and often starts in childhood, although it can also develop for the first time in adults. Symptoms include episodes of wheezing, coughing, chest tightness, and shortness of breath.

COPD is a lung disease characterised by chronic obstruction of lung airflow that interferes with normal breathing and is not fully reversible. Smoking is by far the most common cause of COPD. The poor airflow is the result of breakdown of lung tissue (known as emphysema) and small airways disease (known as obstructive bronchiolitis).

Bronchiectasis is a long-term condition where the airways of the lungs become abnormally widened, leading to a build-up of excess mucus that can make the lungs more vulnerable to infection.

Interstitial Lung Disease (ILD) is a collective term for a group of different lung diseases. These diseases can cause damage to the tissues of the lung (pulmonary fibrosis). Diagnosis and management of ILD can be complex and may require specialist input.

Sarcoidosis is a condition where lumps called granulomas develop at different sites within the body. Sarcoidosis can affect many different parts of the body. It often affects the lungs but can also affect the skin, eyes, joints, nervous system, heart and other parts of the body.

Sleep apnoea is a potentially serious sleep disorder in which breathing repeatedly stops and starts while you are a sleep. If you snore loudly and feel tired even after a full night’s sleep, you might have sleep apnoea. The main types of sleep apnoea are Obstructive sleep apnoea, the more common form that occurs when throat muscles relax, and Central sleep apnoea, which occurs when your brain doesn’t send proper signals to the muscles that control breathing.

Venous Thromboembolism (VTE) is a condition in which a blood clot (a thrombus) forms in a vein, most commonly in the deep veins of the legs or pelvis. This is known as deep vein thrombosis, or DVT. The thrombus can dislodge and travel in the blood, particularly to the pulmonary arteries. This is known as pulmonary embolism, or PE. The term VTE includes both DVT and PE.

TB is a bacterial infection spread through inhaling tiny droplets from the coughs or sneezes of an infected person. It mainly affects the lungs, but it can affect any part of the body, including the tummy (abdomen) glands, bones and nervous system.

The pleural space is the area between the lungs and the chest wall. Pleural effusion (fluid in the pleural space) or pneumothorax (air in the pleural space) are the commonest pleural diseases, they can lead to a partial or complete compression of the lung.

Occupational lung disease are occupational or work-related lung conditions that have been caused or made worse by the materials a person is exposed to within the workplace. It includes a broad group of diseases, including occupational asthma, COPD, inhalation injury, interstitial lung diseases (such as pneumoconiosis, hypersensitivity pneumonitis, lung fibrosis), infections, lung cancer and mesothelioma.
